Not everyone is considers Vail Valley Medical a must see on there lists of things to do and would actually prefer to skip a visit there on their ski trip. But it's nice to know that the medical center with the only level III trauma center in the five county region can handle more than a broken leg or joint pain suffered while mountain biking or skiing.

This hospital does more than patch up tourists...

Vail Valley Medical Center (VVMC) is not your average rural hospital. It is a world-class hub or orthopedic and sports medicine that has attracted internationally renowned professional athletes for treatment and rehabilitation. It also is a state-of-the-art regional Women and Children’s Center delivering more than 700 babies a year. It also keeps mountain dwellers from having to drive 100 miles to Denver for cancer-drug infusions. The VVMC center has 59 beds and the new Shaw Regional Cancer Center in Edwards has its new 12-bed Cancer Caring House. A large part of these hospitals are products of private donations. In Vail the community really gives back to the hospital . This is a unique part of living in the valley.

Also because of the unique outdoor life style of Vail, knee joints, hip joints and spinal columns taking a beating on biking trails, hiking trails, ski runs, golf courses, rock climbing, etc. Keeping people in shape for these outdoor sports is big business at the hospital’s Steadman Hawkins Clinic. In 1990, Dr. Richard Steadman moved to Vail from Lake Tahoe. At that time he was already an established orthopedic innovator. He believes athletes should begin rehabilitation to regain mobility as quickly as possible after surgery. Dr. Steadman has some big names on his patient list such as Joe Montana, John Elway, and Dan Marino.

The chief physician for the U.S. Ski team focuses mostly on knees...

He has developed a procedure called micro fracture surgery that uses the body’s own stem cells to form scar-cartilage, heal torn ligaments, and strengthen weak joints. This procedure has been validated through the clinic’s science-based, nonprofit research foundation. The emphasis of the clinic is on sports and keeping people active. The foundation helps them achieve this mission and is very effective with this help. Dr. Marc Philippon is a hip arthroscopy specialists at the clinic. He feels that there is a good marriage between surgical intervention and rehabilitation at the clinic.

The Howard Head Sports Medicine Centers work closely with local orthopedists...

The Vail based institute of the Jimmie Heuga Center...

which is a non-profit founded by Heuga has taken on chronic conditions such as multiple sclerosis. Heuga is a 1964 Olympic ski racing bronze medalist afflicted with multiple sclerosis. Heuga believe that physical activity could stave off the degenerative effects of multiple sclerosis and studies have proved him right. His philosophy is one of fighting back with intense outdoor activity and that has become a metaphor for life in Vail Valley.
