Summer Vail...Having Fun!

Vail Summer...Having Fun In Vail Colorado. There are plenty of fun outdoor activities in Vail to help keep you in shape this summer. Staying in shape is just plain fun when your in Vail and enjoying the great outdoors. All the activities for all-around fitness are easily available in Vail Valley and they are outdoors. You have activities for endurance, strength, power, agility and balance.

Hikes are probably the most popular and number one activity...

Hiking is great as it can be done with very little setup. Try a Power hike or an endurance hike. Power hikes are usually shorter than an hour in time. Find a steep trail where you are constantly going up. The effort of constantly climbing is going to be painful. To begin pick a definite starting point at the bottom and a stopping point at the top. Each time you climb this trail, time yourself. The next time you climb try to beat the time before. This hike will work your body as a whole but especially the calves and the thighs plus the respiratory and lower back. This massive effort of a power climb needs a warm up so be sure to get it. When hiking be sure to wear the right clothes and shoes. You should wear trail shoes and clothing that keeps the perspiration away from the body and dries easily.

Lightweight clothing is best and a second layer...

should be taken for the cool down on the descent. You don’t want to cool off to fast so you should keep your body insulated on the way down. You might want to use poles as this will help protect your knees on the way down. Hiking for endurance is about building aerobic capacity through a sustained cardiovascular workout. An endurance hike should be at least 2 hours or more in time. To determine a target heart rate, subtract your age from 220 and then take 20 percent off this for your beats per minute.

Kayaking is another sport for a great workout...

that you can find to do in Vail Valley. Proper equipment is required and a little more planning is necessary than just walking our your door for a hike. Kayaking is considered an individual sport but the camaraderie of a group kayaking together and enjoying the environment is an incredible experience. Your upper body gets a tremendous workout and kayaking helps you understand your core body balances. Also because of the changing dynamics of your environment, the sport exercises your spatial awareness. A great cross-training activity for skiing is inline skating. The same motor skills as skiing are used but your joints have an easier time of it. Skating will work your lateral muscles that are very close to the same ones used in skiing. Try the bike path along Gore Creek in Vail or skate up the Vail pass frontage road. You will work your legs, butt, and lower back on way up. Coming back down requires sustained muscle contractions plus learning to control speed by edging like in skiing.

For a sport that requires mental toughness
fine movements, flexibility and balance, try climbing...

You will also need patience and good communication skills for this sport. Climbing together requires incredible trust of ones partner. An awareness of everything going on around oneself is also required. Climbing can be very safe if done correctly and again the best way to go about it in Vail is to sign up with a guide service as there is no room for error when it comes to climbing. Climbing will use some of your smallest muscle fibers. The over all strength to weight ratio of a climber is much higher than in other sports.

Vail Valley and Vail Mountain are great for mountain biking. There are a lot of single track and four-wheel jeep roads around plus the town organizes a series of races during the summer. These races will push your endurance, power, speed and adrenaline. One of the nicest things about mountain biking is the simplicity of it. You can just grab your bike and go for a ride without a lot organization. Mountain biking gets you away from the traffic and exhaust fumes and into the wilderness. Biking is a mostly lower body workout, but the upper body can get a good workout on a really difficult single track especially on a fast downhill ride.

There are also teams sports such as soccer and volleyball played in the valley...

Soccer can be a great sport for eye-foot co-ordination plus you also have the quickness and balance. At Nottingham Park you can find drop-in games plus both Vail and Avon have town recreational leagues. Another popular team sport in Vail Valley for the summer is volleyball. Then of course don’t forget tennis for a great outdoor experience in the Mts. Playing a game of tennis at this altitude will give you a great workout. The tennis center at Beaver Creek has great instructors and a ball machine. For a relaxing casual workout try Frisbee Golf on top of Vail Mt. This is a great way to spend time with friends and enjoy yourself while getting a workout. The Great Outdoor Gym of Vail is waiting for you. So go out and exercise and have the time of your life while doing it.
