Vail and summer activities... Hiking on Vail Mountain in the summer

is the most traditional and one of the most pleasurable ways to enjoy the mountain. There are numerous trails around this majestic terrain that are yours for the hiking. Literally dozens of trailheads can be found in Vail Valley just minutes from town.

By getting on a chairlift or into the gondola
at Lionshead and riding...

to the top at Eagle’s Nest, one can find the start of many wonderful trails that weave their way through the high country flowers, wild strawberries (yes, you can eat strawberries) and open meadows. Looking out at the vistas that are so spectacular one can only imagine that this is paradise. These chairlifts at Vail and Beaver Creek and the gondola operate throughout the summer season. They provide access to clearly marked trails, and walking visitors will see the views and the mountain close up hand.

As you walk down from top of the gondola (about a 3 hour hike) you will understand and feel the majesty that first impressed the early explorers. Of course if you are really into a rigorous day you can hike up the mountain and ride the gondola down. Another favorite hike in a short morning or afternoon is to hike to Booth Falls in East Vail. One will come face-to-face with a spectacular waterfall cascading through the mist. If you’d like a hardier hike, try the nearby Holy Cross Wilderness Area which offers several challenging treks.

There is so much diversity in the landscapes, plants and animals
you encounter as you in this high country.

Keep your eyes peeled and your senses alert to catch the natural sights along your way. There is a silence up there on the mountain and along your trails. You realize that you have become still and quiet.

This is the wilderness therapy that brings you a deep relaxation. Then you can hear the Mt. talking whether it is the soft running of water spilling down a creek or the twittering and peeping of tiny birds. You can hear a clear “chick-a-dee-dee-dee from the numerous chickadees who are telling you their name, but only if you listen.

As you continue your hike remember to look down at your feet...

and notice the wild flowers as you cross an open glade. There will be hundreds of yellow, purple, red, pink, and cream colored flowers waving in the cool breeze. These are the scenes to remember on days when the world does not seem so peaceful.
